  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

If you are injured in a car accident, according to the Insurance Research Council, there is a 14% chance that the vehicle responsible for your injuries is not insured.  That number typically increases when the economy struggles as more and more people are unable or unwilling to pay for car insurance.

Even if the other driver has insurance, chances are that the insurance is not enough to pay all of your damages.  The minimum amount of liability coverage required in Missouri is $25,000 per person injured in the accident and $50,000 per accident.  If you have suffered serious injuries in an accident, this will not be enough to pay your medical bills, lost income and pain and suffering from the accident.

There is some good news.  There are two important insurances coverage that can protect Missouri drivers from these risks:

  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage
  • Underinsured Motorist coverage

Missouri law requires you carry uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage with minimum 25,000/50,000 limits.  This means that if you have purchased car insurance in Missouri, you have uninsured motorist cover in at least this amount.  If you are in an accident with an uninsured motorist, you should have the protection of the $25,000/$50,000 limits.

Uninsured motorist coverage protects:

  • drivers and passengers injured by an uninsured vehicle.
  • hit and run accidents where the negligent driver is unknown; and
  • passengers injured in an uninsured car.

The best protection for drivers is underinsured motorist coverage.  This will apply when the other driver does have insurance but it is insufficient to cover your damages.  This coverage is not required by Missouri law but can be purchased, usually for little money.  We recommend everyone strongly consider purchasing underinsured motorist coverage.

Unfortunately, insurance companies often do not honor the coverage to the amount that they should.  If you have been injured in an accident, you should contact an experienced car accident attorney who can review your policy for uninsured and underinsured insurance coverage.  If you have the coverage, our firm can help you recover the benefits you are owed.

We explore every avenue of recovery for our clients, including uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.  If you have the coverage, we will negotiate with or file suit against the insurance company for failing to provide fair compensation.

We help people collect the uninsured and underinsured benefits they are owed.  We offer a free consultation so that you may discuss your concerns with an experienced attorney.
